Primary 1 / 2 had an exciting trip on the 7th March to the zoo to meet a couple of its newest members, Sweetie and Sunshine (or Tian Tian and Yang Guang, to give them their real names!)
When we met them, Sweetie was sleeping and Sunshine was eating. Apparently they do this a lot!
Afterwards we had a really good workshop when we found out loads of really interesting panda facts. We also had to crawl amongst the bamboo like a real panda would. All great fun.
To make it even better – the sun shone all day!
January 2012
Welcome back and a very happy 2012 to everyone. We have a busy and exciting term ahead and the following are just a few of the things we have to look forward to!
Primary 1 have successfully covered all of their sounds and are now moving on to learning some initial blends. Primary 2 are moving onto onset and rime and then they will be covering final blends.
All the children have been working incredibly hard on their writing. They are consistently sounding out words and trying hard with their handwriting. The class are using 'Gimme 5' strategies and it has been a pleasure to read through all of the wonderful ideas. I am looking forward to some more wonderful writing this term, especially based on our new topic.
Our Maths topic this term will be 'Time'. We will be looking to see how routines and events in our world link with times and seasons and how to record these by using clocks, calendars and other methods. We will be looking at how to use a calendar to plan and organise for key events throughout the year. In addition we will learning how to tell the time using 12 and 24 hour clocks and how it impacts on our daily routines.
Our Topic this term is 'Houses and Homes'. We will be looking at a variety of homes, both in this country and in different climates. We will examine different structures, styles and materials. We will study ways to conserve energy within the home and the impact of recycling.
In R.M.E we are looking at Chinese New Year and we have already designed a fabulous Chinese Restaurant within our role play area. This has been a big success and the children have been cooking, serving, eating, taking orders and sorting our bill payment. They have been totally absorbed in the whole concept.
This term Primaries 1/2 and 2/3 will stage The Spring Show. This will be on the 28th March. Both Ms Lamond and myself are very excited about this and look forward to showcasing the children’s talents then.
I will continue to highlight any ongoing events in our weekly homework letter.
Mrs Simpson December 2011It is hard to believe that Christmas is nearly upon us. We have had such a busy term and the girls and boys have been working incredibly hard. Our topic this term has been Toys. We have looked at toys from the past and compared them to our own. We even managed to recreate our own little toy museum. The children managed to make their own old fashioned paper dolls and especially enjoyed styling the hair. We have looked at the science of toys and what makes them go. We have become proper scientists and have conducted lots of different experiments to looking at forces and noises. In maths we have been learning about shape and money. We have had our own toyshop and have had great fun counting out change to our customers. We have explored 2D and D objects and created our favourite toys from some of these shapes. The children were delighted to receive a letter back from Mr Toymaker and have since written him instructions on how to make dolls! They have worked really hard on their handwriting and sounding out words on their own. Mr Lennon has been teaching the class about Gaelic Football and he has been very impressed by their enthusiasm and energy. We have also been lucky enough to have Shaun Masson, a PE student to come in to coach the children in lots of different gym elements. Primary 1 were shining stars in their Nativity Play and I know they worked very hard at home and in school to learn all their lines and song words. It was a lovely show and I hope you all enjoyed it. I hope you all have a super Christmas and all the very best for the New Year! Mrs Simpson September 2011
