P3/4 Viking Art

In art, we have been creating pictures of Viking raids. We have been learning about figure drawing and the proportions of the human body. To help us understand this we took turns of modelling for the class - we had to pose in 'battle' positions while the rest of the class made quick sketches of the shapes our bodies made. As we observed and completed multiple sketches we found that our drawings improved. Modelling wasn't so easy! It is difficult to stay in the same position for more than a minute!

When we had completed our sketches and felt more confident about showing movement, we produced a final drawing which included lots of Vikings running together. We had to show how their arms and legs overlapped within the group. We also added detail to make everything look more realistic - helmets, shields, tunics and hairy beards!

We really enjoyed this task! It was fun to pretend to be Vikings but we also felt that our figure drawing really improved after we had observed body positions and completed lots of sketches. We were very pleased with our final results.

This term the class topic is Scotland. This topic has opened up a window of learning opportunities that range from investigating the history of Scotland, researching and documenting famous Scots, creating Scottish tartan, symbols and Scottish landscape paintings in art, experiencing Scottish literature and poetry while learning about renowned Scottish poets and writers in the process. The class will also experience learning about various geographical locations in Scotland. This topic will help broaden their familiarity with their own country, historical past and culture.

Checking the pattern Yes! We can do it!

In maths the class have been learning all about measure and have been developing their knowledge of this concept. They have been undertaking lessons that focus on promoting their capacity to use measure in everyday and practical contexts. Consequently, the class have been enjoying the active and engaging nature of the maths lessons in class.

In literacy the class are being encouraged to broaden their vocabulary and to use as many exciting adjectives, verbs and conjunctions in their writing as possible. The neat presentation of work is also a big priority this term and I have been emphasising in class the importance of tidy presentation of work. The class are developing their understanding of headings and sub headings and are beginning to understand when to use these appropriately in their work. The class are participating well in discussion work and thoroughly enjoy learning about punctuation and expression and how to use these effectively in their reading and writing. The class are full of imagination and have also created excellent creative writing pieces this term.

Keep an eye on this web page for further updates of the progress made by P3/4 this year.

P3/4 Art December 2011

The pupils have been studying 'Weather and Water' this term and in their art lessons have enjoyed opportunities to discuss the work of other artists and ways in which they portray things. The pupils were particularly inspired by a painting of Niagara Falls that they had viewed in the National Gallery in June. Keen to produce their own pictures of waterfalls, the pupils used Google images to look for further inspiration and then discussed the best media to use to represent fast-moving water.
After much discussion chalk pastels were chosen as the pupils liked their strong colours and thought they would be good for creating splashes and spray.

As you will see from their work, the pupils also learned about perspective and were able to make their waterfalls look like they were gushing towards you from a point in the distance. Well done p3/4!

September 2011

It’s been a fantastic few weeks in P3/4. Everybody has settled in well to the new school year and the class has been producing excellent pieces of work everyday. The class have shown a real talent for imaginative writing and are developing their understanding of setting, characters and plot development. In maths the class are learning all about time and are increasing their understanding of this concept. As part of our farming topic the children have learned a great deal about farm animals and the produce that comes from them. The class enjoyed an excellent rugby training session this week and have been developing their skills in basketball in PE.

The class are highly motivated to do well in all their endeavours this term. We are all very excited about the year ahead and I am delighted to be teaching P3/4 this year. Keep an eye on this blog for further updates.

Many Thanks,
Mr Lennon
