Summer Term

Primary 4/5 have had a busy start to the term hosting a Titanic Exhibition to their parents and the upper school. It was a super success and we hope all our visitors enjoyed the exhibition as much as we enjoyed creating and hosting it.

We are now moving on to our last topic for the year which is The Olympics. We thought about what we would like to learn about the Olympics and came up with some exciting and interesting ideas. We aim to start with focusing on the history of the Olympic games and the similarities and differences between the Ancient and Modern Day Olympics. Over the course of the term, we will learn about Olympic values and complete factual books on Olympic host cities. We also plan to work together to create our very own Olympic sports and host our own mini-Olympic games.

In maths we are currently learning about fractions but we will be moving onto time and money soon. In PE, we are focusing on athletics. We also have tennis and bowling tasters this term and look forward to taking part in Health and Road Safety weeks. It's going to be a busy few months!

Titanic Art!

A few weeks ago an excited P4/5 arrived for their art lesson waving a sealed envelope! Together we read the enclosed task - to work together to construct a 3D model of the Titanic !

The pupils consulted images of the ship and possible backgrounds then set about producing  a large frieze of the ship at sea. In groups they painted a beautiful starry sky using different shades of blue and a dark, chilly sea using different blocks of colour to create movement in the water.

The ship was made in parts with different pupils adding the details - portholes, railings, flags, funnels and an anchor.

The finished ship is very impressive and makes an eye-catching display in the upper corridor along with the menacing icebergs ready to greet it!

The pupils enjoyed the task so much they asked if they could paint their own individual ships. These were painted using watercolours and show great attention to detail.

January 2012

Hello everyone,

I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a belated 'Happy New Year'.  It was great to welcome the children back to school after the well deserved Christmas holidays, all ready for the term ahead.

This term seems to be whizzing by as we have been extremely busy in class with our new topic ‘The Unsinkable Ship’.  We are working hard to resurrect the Titanic from her watery grave and bring her back to life in all her glory in the P4/5 classroom.  To date, we have worked together to complete a 3D display of the Titanic, a timeline of the Titanic, a map her fatal maiden voyage and research on the lifestyles of passengers who travelled on the ship.  We also examined the similarities and differences between media in the times of the Titanic and media in modern day society.   We then wrote newspaper reports and designed advertising posters for the Titanic.  We hope to have this topic completed by Easter and look forward to sharing our learning with you then.

In other areas, we have completed sequences and patterns and symmetry in maths.  We are now focusing on position and movement and hope to complete 2D/3D shapes and fractions before we break for Easter.  In PE, we have been focusing on games and P4 have been enjoying swimming on Thursday afternoons.  Our focus for PSD is Reaching Goals and Equality which ties in with the new year and our RME research on world hunger.

As per usual, I will keep you updated of our ongoing learning and events through the weekly update on the homework sheet.

Kind regards,
Shirley Brennan

November 2011

Hello again everybody!

We have had a busy start to our second term in Primary 4/5.  We had Miss McRae helping us in class and we performed our Harvest Show to the school, our parents and people in the community.  It was great fun!

We have started our new topic about The Solar System and Dynamic Earth.  We  have completed lots of activities to help us learn all about our Solar System.  We researched planets and made information posters to share with our class.  We also researched astronauts for a homework challenge and wrote a fact file all about our chosen astronaut.  We made space rockets in technology and went on a super trip to Dynamic Earth which will helped us to learn all about the structure of the Solar System and natural disasters that happen on our planet.

In maths we have been learning about measurement and have been using our knowledge of the times tables to help us solve problems.  We are enjoying reading Science Fiction novels in class and look forward to finishing our very own alien stories in writing.  We have had lots of fun completing a variety of space art and drama and have been finding out about customs associated with different world religions in RME.

p4.5danieljosh 640x480.jpg The pupils have been enjoying making models of planets and aliens from junk and papier mache. They worked in pairs to design and create their models and had to work out the best way to join pieces together - a tricky and messy task!

We have been keeping fit by doing gymnastics in PE.  We also had a block of Street Hockey and a Taekwondo taster.  Primary 4 are getting set for their swimming sessions that will be starting shortly.  We have lots of things to look forward to as Christmas approaches that will keep us on our toes!
