Roseburn Primary School - Edinburgh

Our new topic is holiday Britain. We have been put into groups of four and we have to plan a holiday to different destinations like Birmingham, the Isle of Arran and York. We chose our jobs and got our budgets from that. Using information from  the internet we then had to find a way to get there, find accommodation and decide where to get food. All of it had to stay within our budget which was 10% of our profit. With all this information we are making a booklet about our holidays.

This term the pupils have been developing their drawing skills and exploring a range of drawing materials including pencil, charcoal and chalk. The pupils have discussed portraiture and figure drawing and also considered composition in their work.
 

 
Inspired by a portrait of Robert Burns completed in pen using written phrases and sentences, the pupils are in the process of creating a similar picture of Mary Queen of Scots! Finlay from p7 prepared an outline of Mary for the class to work from and the pupils set about writing sets of sentences detailing the important events in Mary's life.  The sentences are being used to build up a tonal picture of Mary. The pupils are having to consider how to create tone using different thicknesses of pens and by altering the spaces between each word. It is a tricky task! Watch this space for the finished results!
 

In addition to the artwork being undertaken in school the pupils also visited the National Portrait Gallery in Queen Street where they were given a guided tour looking at a range of work depicting Mary Queen of Scots. The pupils were impressed by the friezes, murals and paintings in the gallery and marvelled at the tone and texture displayed in the work.
 

It's hard to believe this term is nearly over already. And what a term! The children have continued to work hard on our topic of Space and Our Dynamic Earth. They loved the trip to Dynamic Earth and were commended by staff for their excellent behaviour and enthusiasm. We had a great time finding out more about space as well as taking a trip to the rainforest. The children remembered lots about our topic from last term I'm pleased to say.

Things are now getting busy as we head towards Christmas. We are practising our Christmas carols to sing at Roseburn Court and have enjoyed making crafts for the Christmas Fair, as well as all the fabulous art we have been doing with Mrs. Denvir.
